Why Consider Psychological or Neuropsychological Testing?

Descriptions of potential cognitive effects due to physical conditions, injuries, and/or aging can occupy a person’s mind. Advice from neighbors and friends, internet articles, and social media postings contribute to an abundance of information and often confuses an understanding of what defines normal aging. Only neuropsychological testing provides standardized input to help understand how a person functions relative to their age group.

While psychological testing assists with the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, neuropsychological testing examines neurological disorders, including the effects of brain injury and stroke, and also addresses rehabilitation of brain functioning. The profiles generated by assessment tools are compared to characteristics of various conditions (such as attention or memory disorders) to determine areas where an individual has adequate functioning or probable deficits. Recommendations for cognitive rehabilitation strategies such as remediation programs for attention and visual processing difficulties can then be tailored for the individual.
